Bean Magazine — the Brisbane three‑piece made up of Gabrielle Beiers
(drums), Seb Baren (bass), and Henry Creamer (vocals, guitar) — walked onto the
UC Hub stage to a small Canberra crowd, but you wouldn’t have known it from the
sound they unleashed. From the first hit, they set the tone: high‑energy, 90s‑leaning
grunge and rock with a rawness that feels both nostalgic and completely their
own.
What makes their sound so gripping is the dynamic between the three of them.
Gabrielle and Seb form this tight, almost understated rhythm section — the
“quiet duo” — but their playing is anything but quiet. Gabrielle’s drumming is
punchy and precise, driving the songs with a kind of restless momentum, while
Seb’s bass lines thicken everything up, giving the band that full‑bodied, room‑shaking
presence that so many trios struggle to achieve. Their backing vocals add
texture too, softening or sharpening the edges exactly when needed.
And then there’s Henry Creamer. The voice. The volume. The chaos. His stage
presence is magnetic — bouncing, twisting, throwing himself into every lyric
without ever losing control of the sound. What’s most impressive is how he
shifts his vocal tone from song to song: gritty one moment, clean the next,
sometimes even playful. It turns the set into a performance rather than just a
run‑through of tracks.
Bean’s songwriting is a mixed bag in the best way. Some tracks feel like
they’re carrying something deeper, others are loose, fun, and carefree — but
all of them are delivered with that high‑octane energy that grabs you by the
collar and drags you along. Their lyrics feel open to interpretation too, which
makes the songs hit differently depending on your mood.
One of the most exciting things about seeing them live is how their songs
evolve. They don’t just replicate the recordings — they stretch them, twist
them, let the moment shape the sound. It’s creative, unpredictable, and
honestly part of what makes them so addictive to watch.
If you want a band that hooks you from the first note, Bean Magazine are
absolutely one to catch. They’re currently one of our favourite live acts, and
we’ve had them on repeat at home ever since we first heard them. Their live show might differ from
the studio versions, but that’s exactly why they’re so compelling.
